The mosquito coast

Film Synopsis

In The Mosquito Coast, Harrison Ford plays Allie Fox, a genius at odds with society’s norms who leads his family out of modern civilization and into the jungle, where he claims land and wields power to build a utopian society. Ultimately he creates a version of what he so passionately rails against.

Climate LENS

The quest for technological breakthroughs and the enthusiasm of some innovators can be powerful, persuasive tools that lead to progress. Yet the devotion to specific solutions and the status of individuals creating them must always be questioned, even when their intentions seem to align with ours.

Is this a movie about science vs. religion or about science and religion working together?

Is Mother a victim or an enabler? Why? (in a climate context)?

Are the children victims or beneficiaries? Why (in a climate context)?

Are the villagers and Hattie part of the story or peripheral? Why (in a climate context)?

Did Allie accomplish anything? What?

Are the children and mother left with anything worthwhile at the end? What? What will - or can - they do next?
